DMX Universe

A DMX universe is a single 512-channel control space. All fixtures in a universe share those 512 channels. Free users control one universe; Premium users can add more output ports for multi-universe control.

What Is a Universe?

In DMX512, a universe is the fundamental unit of a DMX line. One universe = one physical DMX cable = 512 control channels. A lighting console that outputs to multiple universes has multiple physical DMX outputs.

In Art-Net, multiple universes are carried over the same network. Each Art-Net packet contains a universe identifier so receiving nodes know which universe the data belongs to.

Channel Capacity

A single universe provides 512 channels. The total channel count of all patched fixtures must fit within 512. Fixtures must be assigned start addresses so that no two fixtures use overlapping channel ranges.

Strobe + Misc (ch 113–132)

Universe Output in DMX Node

Each output port on an Art-Net node drives one universe. All fixtures, scenes, Submasters, Chases, and FX layers reference channels within their assigned universe. Free users have one output port per node (universe 0 by default), providing 512 channels.

If your rig exceeds 512 channels, consider upgrading to Premium to add more output ports, or reduce channel usage per fixture by selecting a lower-channel fixture mode.

Art-Net Universe Addressing

Art-Net identifies universes using a three-part address: Net (N), Subnet (S), and Universe (U). Each output port in DMX Node Settings can be configured with its own N/S/U values. Configure your Art-Net node's DMX output port to match the universe address configured in the app.

Most Art-Net nodes default to N=0, S=0, U=0. Consult your node's documentation if DMX output is not working — the node port may be configured for a different universe address.

Multi-Universe (Premium)

Premium users can add multiple output ports to an Art-Net node in Settings. Each port is assigned an independent N/S/U Art-Net address and drives a separate 512-channel universe. This enables larger rigs that require more than 512 channels across multiple physical DMX outputs.
